Anetole

So for my first blog I decided to flag a cab. Who better to ask about life than a NYC cabbie right? I hailed him at 25th and 6th around 3am on a Saturday.

His Name: “Anetole (Mumbles)”

Favourite Colour: "I don't know. Red?"

How Long He’s Been a cab driver: “10 years in New York, 8 in Boston…I went to school here. I had a girlfriend then who looked like you then. (laughs)”

Something strange he’s seen: “Oh people do all kinds of dirty things back there”--he looks at me in the mirror--“Don’t worry, it’s clean now. One time I pick up some couple...very late from a bar uptown. Very, very drunk you know. They were...oh…had no respect. (laughs)

So what did you do?: "I had to stop the cab and tell them to stop, but they didn’t. I don’t have any problem with sex. It’s a beautiful thing, but not here! (laughs) They were drunk.”

What he would tell his 17 year old self: “Ohhh…enjoy life, enjoy it all. Don’t rush so much. How old are you? You really remind me of my old girlfriend.”

If you could be any drink what would you be and why: “What kind of question is this? I would have to say Raki, It’s Greek. You ever had it?”

How many times have you been in love: “I have loved many times. That’s a hard one. I guess I’ll say once incase my wife reads this. What’s the address anyway?”

If you could have any other job what would you do: “I’d be retired because I turned 60 last month. I’ve done lots of jobs but this one isn’t the worst. I would also like to go back to school, but I’m an old man now.”

Is there anywhere you would rather be than here?: “Ohh yeah, of course I would be back home in Greece. But a man needs to make money and I like it here. You said you were from Canada? I went to uhhh…Toronto once, very nice. Very beautiful. Are you writing all this down?”
